What if Jonathan Morgenstern had lived: Valentine’s Day

If you read City of Heavenly Fire, you can probably still remember how you felt when Jonathan died. Angry, sad, disappointed, unfair he died before he got a chance to live. I felt it all. So did my brain. My mind started playing with the concept What If Jonathan Had Lived? That’s why I’ve decided to write this series of short scenes. They all take place after the ending of COHF (apart from the first one) and all include Jonathan Morgenstern. I do not own these characters and these events never happened, it’s all from my imagination. This scene takes place on Valentine’s Day.

He saw her standing in front of their meeting spot and sneaked up on her, wrapping his arms around her waist and tugging her to his chest. She shrieked as he nibbled on her ear. “Happy Valentine’s Day.” he murmured in her ear. She twisted in his embrace and turned around, her eyes sparkling and a smile pulling her lips. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Jonathan.” she said, before kissing him. He cupped her cheeks and kissed her back, her soft lips sending sparks through his veins. River pulled back and bit her lip, looking at him throug her eyelashes. Her cheeks were flushed and Jonathan grinned. She smacked him in the chest. “Stop that!” It only made him grin harder. “I’m not doing anything!”
“You’re having that stupid grin on your face.” she crossed her arms. “What stupid grin?” He said, knowing very well what she meant. “You always have that grin on your face when I pull back from a kiss blushing.” she said, her cheeks turning even more red. “Because it’s adorable.” Jonathan told her. River dropped her eyes, and looked at her feet. He took her hands and pulled her to him again, folding their hands together against his chest. “You are the most adorable creature walking on this planet.” he murmured softly and her eyes flicked up to meet his. “Don’t ever doubt that I would laugh at you. I love you, okay?” She nodded and bit her lip before crashing her lips on his, and he was lost. Whenever they kissed, it was like time didn’t exist. Finally, they pulled back, both breathless. River laughed and laced her fingers through his. “Come on, I have a surprise for you.” He let her pull him with. “I love surprises. Especially if they’re yours, Hudson.” He winked and she flushed again, but smiled anyway. They walked through the streets of New York, her arm laced through his, talking and laughing. Jonathan felt most comfortable when he was with her. She was the only one who didn’t know him in his Sebastian-era, and when he was with her, he had the chance to re-invent himself. To be Jonathan Morgenstern. After a halfhour with the underground and a fifteen minute walk, they were there. What ‘there’ was, Jonathan wasn’t yet sure of, but River knew the way and led him inside a big grey building with wooden doors. Inside he spotted the photo’s and the laserguns. “We’re going lasergaming?” he wonderd out loud. He had never done it before, but Simon and Clary had, and he had stories about how fun it was. Jace, of course, had huffed when he heard them talk about it. Jonathan couldn’t blame him. Why would you go lasergaming where you pretended to shoot the other and the other would pretend to die, when you were a shadowhunter, dealing with demons every other day? But he didn’t say that to River. She smirked at him and nodded. “Yep. I thought that’d be fun since you’ve never done it before.” Jonathan smiled. “Let’s do it. I’m totally going to beat you though.” She smacked his arm. “We’ll see about that.” They rented laserguns and a special suit and soon were ready to go into the ‘arena’, as it was called. “I feel like we’re going into The Hunger Games.” River giggled. They had recently watched the first two movies together before going to see Mockingjay in the cinema, so Jonathan knew what she was talking about. “Do you want to be allies?” he murmured in her ear, pulling her to him. She wriggled herself free. “You wish!” and sprinted off between the rocks. He followed, but gave her a headstart. He tucked his lasergun against his side and slipped from rock to rock, hiding himself, following her trail. Eventually, River came walking back, her lasergun pointed out and she looked around her suspiciously. “Where did he go?” he heard her mumble and at that point he ducked out from his hiding place and pulled the trigger. A laserray hit her side and she shrieked and jumped to the side, but it was already to late. Jonathan grinned, and held up his gun. “One point for me, zero for you.” She lifted her gun towards him and shot him in his leg. “Shit.” he mumbled. She cocked her hip and batted her eyelashes, smiling sweetly. “That’s a tie.” He darted towards her. “You minx!” she shrieked laughing and sprinted away from him. He ran after her, both making their way through the rockmaze. River ran in a dead end and he grinned when she turned around. “Awh baby, got nowhere to go?” she lifted the gun and pulled the trigger but he ducked and the laserray shot past him. He immediately held up his own gun and shot her in the arm. She groaned and he smirked, and mouthed: “Two points for me.” whilst helding up two fingers. Then he shot out of the alley and back into the maze. They played for a while, both trying to get the other shot as many times. Eventually, River got the lucky endshot and the game was over. “You let me win!” she poked him in his side while they walked out of the arena. “I didn’t.” he grinned at her. “You did! Admit it, you let me win.” They gave back their suits and laserguns. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Jonathan replied, but a grin stuck on his lips. River shook her head. “You are unbelievable.” He pulled her to his chest and kissed her forehead. “Yes. Unbelievably in love with you.” She blushed but smiled and he kissed her smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Let’s go.” They put their coats back on and walked out. “Where are we going?” River asked him, whilst lacing her fingers through his. “The Institute.” She frowned. “Jonathan, you know I’m not allowed in there..”
“You are this one time.”
“Why?” He looked at her, smiling. “Because you’re going to have a talk with Jace about your Ascension.”
