Review: Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare

25494343

Summary:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

Review:

*SPOILER FREE*

I don’t even know where to start! I’m a huge Shadowhunters fan, and I was in love with these characters long before I got my hands on this book, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. I fell in love with them all over again since they grew up so much from the glimpses we got of them in City of Heavenly Fire.

Julian looked over and smiled. The smile made him look like sunlight in human form. It didn’t hurt that the dish towel around his neck had kittens on it, and there was pancake batter on his calloused hands.

Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare

22428828

Good morning shadowhunters!

Last night I found out that the release date of Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1), according to goodreads was moved to March 2016. This is tragic news for shadowhunters all over the world, since snippets, drawings and every tweet Cassie has posted about it made me so freaking excited to read it. I’ll just wait in my room crying till it comes out.

Or maybe not.

As you probably know, we have Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy to look forward to.

tumblr_nbw0x2a5Mr1sxgfooo1_500

Sorry, I’m overly excited about this!

You may want to avoid this post if you haven’t read City of Heavenly Fire yet.

Every month, for ten months, beginning in February, one short story will be published as e-novella! The same way as The Bane Chronicles, it’ll later be published in an awesome printed edition (let’s pray for Robert Sheehan on the cover *dreamy eyes*).

Now this collection of stories, will follow Simon’s journey to ascend and become a Shadowhunter, after he lost his memories and his immortality, to get our loved gang out of Edom. Simon Lewis is our hero, and I’ve shed quite a lot of tears over him, so this comes as a really helpful and welcomed form of therapy.

These are the snippets Cassie shared so far:

Simon could barely believe any of his new memories, but the idea that Isabelle Lightwood had been his girlfriend seemed more unbelievable than the fact vampires were real and Simon had been one.

Then Simon gathered up his courage, turned and walked over to Isabelle. Isabelle was the last person he had to say goodbye to: she would be the hardest one to say goodbye to. She wasn’t like Clary, openly tearful, or like any of the others, sorry to see him go but basically all right. She seemed more indifferent than anyone, so indifferent Simon knew it was not real. “I’m going to come back,” said Simon.

Cassie, with Sarah Rees Brennan, Robin Wasserman, and Maureen Johnson as partners in crime, said about the series:

“Wrapping up the Mortal Instruments series was a hugely emotional time for me. It was so hard to let the characters go, but I felt I’d left them in good places. All except Simon—his ending was unconventional and open for more story. I knew I wanted him to go through the training process to become a Shadowhunter, something we haven’t really seen, but there wasn’t room for that in The Dark Artifices, the next books, because it’s a book of its own. I wound up discussing it with Maureen and Sarah, and we really missed doing The Bane Chronicles together and thought this would be a perfect second project for us since we all love Simon. Maureen actually loves him the most. We brought our friend Robin Wasserman on board as well since she’s such an amazing writer. The stories will follow Simon, but also flip back and forth in time so you can expect to see Jace and Clary, Will and Jem, Tessa, and Emma—characters old and new!”

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’ve been freaking out since the first time she hinted possible stories about Simon. Cassie (bless her), never ceases to amaze us and to give us exactly what we want and need!

This isn’t only a post to share my madness though, I wanted to share with you release dates and summaries of every short story:

February 17: Welcome to the Shadowhunter Academy

After living as a Mundane and a Vampire, Simon never thought he would become a Shadowhunter, but today he begins his training at Shadowhunter Academy.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

March 17: The Lost Herondale

In the early nineteenth century, Tobias Herondale abandoned his fellow Shadowhunters in the heat of battle and left them to die. His life was forfeit, but Tobias never returned, and the Clave claimed his wife’s life in exchange for Tobias’s. Simon and his fellow students are shocked to learn of this brutality, especially when it is revealed the woman was pregnant. But what if the child survived…could there be a lost Herondale line out in the world today?

Written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

April 21: The Whitechapel Fiend

Simon learns the truth behind the Jack the Ripper murders—“Jack” was stopped by Will Herondale and his institute of Victorian Shadowhunters.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson.

May 19: Nothing But Shadows

It’s hard to be a Shadowhunter when you’ve got demonic powers. Simon learns about the school-time struggles of half-warlock James Herondale in this prelude to The Last Hours.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

June 16: The Evil We Love

The Shadowhunter Academy has only just reopened following the disastrous rise of the Circle. Now the faculty can finally admit to what happened when Valentine was a student.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

July 21: Pale Kings and Princes

As a former vampire, Simon’s always been sympathetic to Downworlders. But after a training exercise goes wrong, he gets a glimpse into the Shadowhunters’ prejudice as he learns about the origin of Helen and Mark Blackthorn, principle characters in The Dark Artifices.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

August 18: Bitter of Tongue

After Simon is kidnapped by faeries (why is he always kidnapped?), he uncovers rumors of a secret weapon Sebastian left behind for the faerie queen. He must escape the Fey, relying on his only ally, former Shadowhunter and Dark Artifices character Mark Blackthorn.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

September 15: The Fiery Trial

Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn become parabatai. Simon and Clary both act as their witnesses, so they can see what a parabatai bond forming looks like as they want to become parabatai as soon as Simon graduates — and because Emma asked Clary. The ritual goes unexpectedly…

Written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

October 20: Born to Endless Night

Simon, like the rest of the Academy, is stunned when a navy-skinned warlock baby is found on the Academy steps. They hand the child over to guest lecturer Magnus Bane, who has to bring a child home… temporarily, of course… to his man!

Written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

November 17: Angels Twice Descending

Someone lives and someone dies at Simon’s Ascension ceremony.

Written by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman.

These summaries all sound so awesome (and scary), I can’t wait to read them all!

I can’t choose which story I’m more anxious to read, what about you?
