Review: Right Where You Are (Second Chances #1) by L.E. Bross

Summary:

Avery Melrose is used to having it all. So when her boyfriend cheats on her, she reacts like any spoiled rich girl-she freaks out and vandalizes his new truck, Carrie Underwood style. Now she’s stuck with 300 hours of community service doing road-side garbage duty.

But sometimes, being around Avery makes Seth think he could make something of himself. Maybe even be worthy of a girl like her. It’s just too bad real life gets in the way first, tearing these two apart before they have any chance of getting to Happily Ever After.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book, but it’s not one of those books that I’ll keep thinking about. Though, it interested me enough to want to read the next one.

At first I had genuinely not liked her, especially after I found out who, or what, she really was. But damn me if my pulse didn’t jump every time I looked at her. 

We have the usual rich girl who falls for the bad boy, but it wasn’t exactly like that. First of all Seth is not a bad boy at all. Yes, he was in jail, but he was there because he’d tried to save his sister from their step-dad, and then for some reason (you’ll find out reading the book) he got kind of framed, and so ended up in jail and now community service. He’s got nothing so he doesn’t think he’s anywhere near worthy of Avery.

I needed a million other things that weren’t Avery. But I’ve never really been good at staying away from what I want.

Avery is rich, spoiled, she caught her long term boyfriend cheating on her, so she trashed his truck; that’s why she’s on community service. At first she seems every bit the classic spoiled daddy’s girl, but she’s actually pretty cool. She’s just girly, and not used to road-side garbage duty. Avery’s life is always been about making her parents happy, following the path they put in front of her, but as the story unfolds she becomes stronger and more indipendent until she finally finds her own way. Avary and her character development is probably one of the things I liked the most about this book.

“I don’t know what the hell this is, but you’ve got me, Avery. For however long you want me.”

The only thing that bugged me a little is how the romance developed. I loved how it started with so much passion, but then it turned to hate, and I’m okay with that but I think it escaleted a bit too quickly. Then they solved things and started over and it was cute. But I think this book had a lot of potential, and all it needed was to dig deeper into Seth and Avery’s own story, their families. I would have loved reading more about Avery and her father’s relationship; or Seth and her sister’s maybe through some flashbacks.

Between Avery and this job, I actually felt like I might have a fucking chance at a future.

Overall it was a good quick read that hooks you enough to get to the end and want to read more.
